Lincoln, Van Allen and Salem elementaries will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on May 13th.
Students, parents and community leaders will be actively commuting from a central location, that will be McMillan Park for Lincoln and Van Allen students, and Salem City Park for Salem students. Please be on the lookout for extra pedestrians in these areas, walkers and bicyclists will arrive at the school around 8am. Other special activities associated with the event include the 5th grade Wellness Ambassadors have created a coloring sheet that will be used for a coloring contest to promote the event to the rest of the students. Matt Burkey from Safe Routes to School planned the routes for students to commute. Matt will also be the speaker for the school assemblies on May 1st to get the students pepped up about the event. Community officials from the Mount Pleasant Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Department, local Fire Departments and the City of Mount Pleasant will be at the schools to applaud the students when they arrive and celebrate the joys of active commuting.
Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
The event is being organized by Mandi Morin at Henry County Public Health and the Mount Pleasant Community School District Wellness Committee. Walk, Bike and Roll to School day is more than a one-day event—it’s a small, visible piece of a much bigger community effort to build healthier, safer, and more connected places to live.
