Henry County Public Health now offers free Narcan kits, also known as naloxone, for community members to pick up during regular business hours. Narcan is a lifesaving medicine that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, including overdoses involving heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications.
Narcan can save a life in minutes, and everyone in our community can help prevent overdose deaths. Having Narcan available, just like keeping a first aid kit nearby, is a simple way to be prepared for an emergency.
Narcan is safe, easy to use, and no medical training is required. When you pick up a Narcan kit, a trained public health staff member will explain how to use it and answer any questions you may have.
Narcan can be safely given to people of all ages, from infants to older adults, including children who may have accidentally taken prescription opioid medication.
“Anyone could find themselves in a situation where they have the chance to save a life,” said Public Health Director Dixie Moberg. “Having Narcan with you means you’re prepared to help a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or even someone you’ve never met.”
Picking up a Narcan kit is a simple but meaningful step that can help you be ready to respond when every minute matters. Public Health staff will also provide brief instructions on how to use the kit.
